Add on New Zealand: Parasites in the Pacific

Coming half way around the world? Stretch that tax deductible travel or student conference grant and combine your visit with Parasites in the Pacific, a joint meeting of Australia and New Zealand’s parasitology societies held in Auckland, 26th-29th August. Visit conference website.

Trematodes 2027, Geneva

We hope that this meeting will become a triennial fixture important for all trematode researchers. The next iteration, Trematodes 2027, is planned for Geneva, Switzerland, to be held at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle. At Trematodes 2024, we will be interested to hear proposals to host Trematodes 2030.

Online casinos: what actually decides the odds

A short, plain-English primer on how online casino games work — written the way a methods section would be, not the way an advertisement is. Nothing here recommends an operator or carries a promotional link.

The house edge is the design, not the luck

Every casino game carries a built-in margin. On slots it is expressed through the RTP (return to player): a 96% RTP means that across millions of spins the game returns 96% of everything staked, and keeps four. That figure is an average over a sample so large that your own session is statistically invisible inside it. It does not predict an evening, and it never means the game owes you anything after a losing run.

Volatility explains what the RTP cannot

Two games can share the same RTP and behave nothing alike. A low-volatility game pays small amounts often and drains a balance slowly; a high-volatility one pays rarely and large, with long dry stretches in between. Same 96%, completely different bankroll required. Most people who describe themselves as unlucky were simply playing a high-volatility game with a balance sized for a low-volatility one.

Independence, and the fallacy that follows from ignoring it

Outcomes are produced by a random number generator, and each round is independent. A machine is never "due", a roulette wheel has no memory, and the list of previous results printed beside a live table tells you exactly nothing about the next spin. Chasing losses is the practical form of that misunderstanding: because the house edge applies again to every additional stake, trying to win a loss back increases the expected loss rather than reducing it.

The three lines of the terms that matter

If you read nothing else before depositing anywhere, read what a bonus's wagering requirement is calculated on, which games contribute to it and at what percentage, and what the maximum amount payable from bonus winnings is. Those three clauses account for the large majority of disputes, and all three are readable in about five minutes.

18+  Gambling carries a risk of financial loss and addiction. This section is information, not an invitation to play, and it names no operator. Age limits and licensing differ by country — check your own regulator.
